The jury justified the decision as follows: “Lady Gaga is the most successful pop artist out there today; the queen of self-invention and a cultural phenomenon. The fans love her music, columnists review her videos, and professors are researching her influence on our culture. The artistic synthesis that is Lady Gaga is comprised not only of the songs that she composes and produces herself, but of her eccentric performances and videos, which she personally directs down to the tiniest detail.

For her stage productions she draws inspiration from fashion and cultural history, becoming thereby an inspiration for others herself – not least for her fans. She sees her current album “Born This Way” as an appeal for respect and tolerance. Regardless of skin colour, language, gender: 'We are all people', is her message.”
